Advisicon has a great presence at this year’s 2009 Microsoft Project Conference being held in Phoenix. Along with exhibiting, six members of our team are on hand representing a mix of consultants and solutions architects who are attending sessions, hand-on labs and meeting with Microsoft developers and managers responsible for the Project product.

Wednesday September 16, 2009 was the official announcement of Microsoft Project 2010. The morning session keynote was delivered by Chris Capossela, Microsoft Senior Vice President. Below are some of the highlights of the new product. Don’t forget to track us on Twitter (@Advisicon).

  • Biggest Release of Microsoft Project in the last decade
  • Other products among new releases this year (2009 viewed as the Year of Innovation):
  • Solution platforms that target the PC, mobile phone, Internet browser
  • The Microsoft Project 2010 Business Application integrate major areas into one solution:
    • Unified communications
    • Business intelligence
    • Enterprise content management
    • Collaboration
    • Enterprise search
  • Microsoft focused on the end user experience:
    • Unify the Project/Portfolio Management (PPM) experience
    • Build a scalable and connected release
    • Enhanced collaboration and reporting
    • Simple and intuitive end user experience
  • Features include:
    • Timeline view
    • Ribbon UI
    • Backstage view
    • Making Project look and feel like Excel
    • Project Web Access (PWA)
      • Delegation is being put in the hands of the end user
      • Project Server Interface (PSI) has been extended to include portfolio management
        • PSI is backward compatible for those who have developed in 2007
        • A lot more things a developer can do that just flows up to PWA
  • Outlook e-mail tasks:
    • Indents and keeps structure when pasted into Project
    • Can enter values into the Project summary tasks
    • Drag and drop with a high level plan
    • User controlled scheduling
    • Can type info right into the fields
    • Tasks go beyond the summary task, showing scheduling problems
    • Key dates communication to stakeholders
      • Timeline view
      • Zooming
      • Drag and drop
      • Pasting of timeline view is the office art so you can edit and format
  • Eliminated the need for Active X
  • Server ribbon interface
  • Enter data just like you do in project (e.g. enter ‘TBD’ in a duration field)
  • Multi-level undo works on Server now too

We will continue learning and taking notes during the remaining day of the conference. We are eager to help companies leverage the potential power of the updated software.

Regards,

Tim Cermak
